Fair Skin vs. Tanned

It’s April in Texas and I look like a cast member of Twightlight! I’m practically glowing! I boycott my tanning habit almost exactly a year ago when I noticed my skin aging more rapidly. Continuing to spray tan for a few months after, I then finally realized I couldn’t even remember what my “real” color was. So, I took a break from it all to get back to my true color… and that was fun, but I’m ready to come back to the light!

There is nothing I look forward to more than the return of sunshine in Spring. Call me crazy, but MOST people look better with a little color. Even though I took my “tanorexia” to the extreme in my early 20′s (aging me tremendously) I don’t think I should punish myself by being a vampire forever.

I DO believe in using SPF religiously. Additionally, spray tans, airbrush tanning, and self-tanners are the safest way to get your tan on!

Do these celebs look better bronzed? Yay or Nay?

Why do some people look better with color?

  • You look healthier
  • You look thinner
  • Your teeth look whiter
  • Masks blemishes (scars, cellulite, & red spots)

Now, don’t get me wrong with my tanning rant. While some people look good with a glow, others are just as gorgeous pale, cool and icey! Work with what you got and own it, Ladies!

Health and Beauty: Epsom Salt

I highly believe in taking time for yourself, pampering and using natural products whenever available and easily accessible. Epsom salt is so under-rated. I love this magical stuff! I always have bags/cartons of it on hand at my house and use it for anything and everything. Baths are my favorite use for Epsom salt!

Eases Stress and Relaxes the Body – Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes your level of magnesium. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina. Some experts believe that Epsom salt baths at least three times a week help you to look and feel better. Magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering adrenaline. It can also lower blood pressure, improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly.

Exfoliates dead skin – In the shower or bath, mix a handful of Epsom salt with a tablespoon of bath oil or olive oil and rub all over your wet skin to exfoliate and soften. Rinse thoroughly.

Exfoliating face cleanser – To clean your face and exfoliate skin at the same time, mix a half-teaspoon of Epsom salt with your regular cleansing cream. Gently massage into skin and rinse with cold water.

Remove splinters – Soak affected skin area in an Epsom salt bath to draw out the splinter.

Unclog blackheads – Add a teaspoon of Epsom salt and 3 drops iodine into a half cup of boiling water. Apply this mixture to the blackheads with a cotton ball.

Remove foot odor – Mix a half cup of Epsom salt in warm water and soak your feet for 10 minutes to remove bad odor, soothe achy feet, and soften rough skin.

Remove hairspray – Combine 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 1 cup Epsom salt. Cover the mixture and let set for 24 hours. The next day, pour the mixture into your dry hair and leave on for 20 minutes before shampooing as normal.

Hair volumizer – Combine equal parts deep conditioner and Epsom salt and warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Athlete’s Foot – Soak feet in an Epsom salt bath to help relieve the symptoms of Athlete’s Foot.

Treat toenail fungus – Soak your affected toes in hot water mixed with a handful of Epsom salt three times a day.

Soothe sprains and bruises – Add 2 cups Epsom salt to a warm bath and soak to reduce the pain and swelling of sprains and bruises.

Now, go pick up a some of these magic crystals at your local drug store and keep it on hand. You never know when you might need some Epsom salt to solve your health or beauty issues!

Foods to Fight Breakouts

Like so many people, I struggled with acne as a teenager. I felt as though I tried every product on the market, but nothing seemed to work. As an adult, I learned that the causes of acne weren’t what I thought. Yes, hormones were a huge factor, but I now know diet played a part then and now in my current random breakouts. I think one of the most covetable beauty traits is being blessed with naturally clear skin, but we all know that even the luckiest people get a blemish once in a while. The phrase “you are what you eat” most directly applies to skin health. While it’s now proven that chocolate is NOT a culprit, nutrition still might be to blame. So, put down the greasy pizza unless you want your face looking like that!

Pesky pimples are never any fun, so you might be surprised to learn that making some small swaps in your daily diet might be all you need to do to get clearer skin. Start reading food labels to determine nutritional content of foods. Check for higher vitamin and mineral values and lower sugar, sodium and fat content. Choose foods that are high in nutrition and fiber, low in calories and contain antioxidant properties to cleanse you from the inside out. I researched acne-fighting food properties that are proven to help beat breakouts. Not only are these things good for your skin, they’re good for your figure as well. Schweet! Be sure to check out my list below and keep these healthy staples in mind the next time you hit the grocery store.

TEN FOODS to FIGHT BREAKOUTS

Cucumber = Water

  • Foods in high water content: This means… drink water, water and more water! Keeping your body hydrated is one of the best things you can do for yourself inside and out. This healthy habit shows through your skin, too. In addition to drinking your 8 glasses a day (a daily requirement in my book), eating foods high in water content like watermelon, cucumbers, and parsley will free your system of toxins as well.

Salmon = Omega-3 Fatty Acid

  • Foods with omega-3 fatty acids: This includes salmon, flax seeds, and walnuts. Foods with omega-3 fatty acids have been known to give skin a glow almost instantly. These foods can also help reduce inflammation, so any blemishes you do have won’t be quite so red. I love salmon! There is are many ways to prepare it and change up the flavor. Adding flaxseed to a fresh fruit smoothie is another simple way to boost your omega-3 fatty acids without having to actually eat them and taste them.

Berries = Antioxidant

  • Antioxidant filled foods: It’s no surprise that antioxidant foods are great for your health. So, why wouldn’t they be good for your skin too? Antioxidant rich foods like cherries, berries, green tea and spinach attack free radicals in your body that cause skin damage and breakouts. Eating a handful of berries or spinach is a great way to add antioxidants into your diet.

Almonds = Selenium

  • .Foods rich in selenium: Brazil nuts, almonds, onion, garlic, and whole grains are all sources of selenium. This is also a powerful antioxidant. These foods help preserve your skin’s elasticity and reduce inflammation. It should be easy to get a good dose of this a day. I love cooking with onions and garlic. Especially for dinner. Just eating a handful of almonds a day is an easy way to up your selenium intake. That should be easy to do with breakfast or lunch. Eating them solo or including them in your cereal, yogurt, or salad.

Oranges = Vitamin C

  • Foods rich in vitamin C: Drink your orange juice, people! Also, melons, oranges, tomatoes, and strawberries will all boost your immune system and they will strengthen your cell walls. These foods that are packed with vitamin C will help protect your skin from acne scarring (woo hoo!) and activate healing powers to amend damaged or irritated skin. Plus, they are absolutely delicious! So, make sure you eat these special fruits!

Eggs = Vitamin E

  • Foods rich in vitamin E: This category includes nuts, soybeans, almonds, leafy greens and eggs. Vitamin E rich foods also help protect your skin from scarring. An easy way to get your daily dose is by drizzling olive oil on a salad or using it to cook. I ALWAYS you use olive oil when cooking. I love the way it tastes and how it flavors and cooks up the food. Great to cook with! I also eat a lot of eggs, but usually skip the yolk every other time.

Brown Rice = Magnesium

  • Foods high in magnesium: These foods are great acne fighters, because magnesium helps to balance acne-inducing hormones. Try artichokes, oatmeal, brown rice, and figs to get hormonal acne under control. I eat oatmeal for breakfast and brown rice with dinner at least twice a week. Artichokes are also amazing if you’ve never had one… try it! I know they look weird, but they are easy to cook (just steam) and one of my fave foods.

Sweet Potatoes = Vitamin A

  • Foods rich in vitamin A: Foods that give your body vitamin A are rich in beta-carotene, which enhances the benefits of selenium (the antioxidant that preserves your skin’s elasticity and reduces inflammation). Your skin will thank you if you include carrots, bell peppers, cantaloupes, and sweet potatoes into your daily diet. So, vitamin A and selenium work together to make your skin look better. These fruits and veggies are also great for your skin tone as well!
  • Low sodium foods: To avoid pimples from flaring up, try to limit the amount of processed or prepared foods in your diet. Foods that are packed with salt not only make your body bloat up like a balloon, they also wreak havoc on your skin.  Substituting canned or frozen vegetables with fresh ones can make a huge difference in lowering your sodium intake. You will also feel so much better if you eat “clean foods” that are unprocessed and have low sodium.
  • White foods aren’t the right foods: Foods like white bread, white rice, white refined flour, french fries, and mashed potatoes are some of the worst things to have in your diet. Refined sugar is another culprit in this category, because it makes your blood sugar levels spike, which then can cause acne breakouts. Stick to whole grains and brightly colored fruits and veggies. If anything else, just remember White foods are not the right foods if you want clear skin.

I learned so much while writing this article and hope you do too when you read it! If you only take away one thing… remember the phrase “you are what you eat.” I don’t know about you, but this list looks pretty delicious to me and it’s stuff I already like. The best part is that it will make you feel and look good inside and out!

Wake Up Looking Gorgeous

Do you want to wake up looking just as gorgeous as when you fell asleep? Even if you primp before bed you can wind up with beauty blunders in the A.M. Believe me, I know how irritating it is to wake up from a night of beauty sleep to find your bedding stained and your beauty routine completely wasted. I’ve gathered some solutions for the most common mishaps so you can sleep peaceful and wake up looking gorgeous!

CHAPPED LIPS – Non-Kissable Pruned Pucker

Do you have limp lips that are thin or dry? Keeping your pout plump, soft, and supple is a must. As a woman it is important to keep kissable lips. Half the time a man looks at 3 things on a woman while she is talking: her eyes, lips, and breasts (it’s true)! So, it’s no different to wake up and want your lips looking and feeling just as great as the night before! LipFusion XL can be applied at night and the effect of fullness and moisture will have increased tremendously! You can really see and feel the difference. To continue your experience reapply with LipFusion Color Shine throughout the day to continue the effects.

SMUDGED NAIL POLISH – Looks Like a 5yr old “painted” Your Nails

Caution: wet paint! Hate when you think your manicure has dried only to wake up with dents and smudges? Although your fingertips may feel dry to the touch in minutes, complete hardening takes over an hour! I am always so impatient and it never fails that I mess up my nails almost every time I get them done or polish them myself. To be safe, use a fast dry top coat and be sure to paint your nails two hours before hitting the hay.

TANNER STAINS – Skid Marks on Your Bed?.. For Real?

To avoid spray tan, air brush or self-tanner stains on your clothes, it’s wise to wear loose clothing afterwards or apply the lotion before bed. Even though you stand there waiting to dry (which seems like forever when you’re in your “birthday suit”) how can you make sure that hint of tint doesn’t rub off onto your clothes or sheets? I’m standing there dancing around, flapping my arms and it still never fails… STAINS! So, I found a solution. After the lotion or spray tan dries on your skin, apply a light layer of baby powder to absorb any excess moisture, but DO NOT rub it into your skin.

WRINKLES – Those Aren’t Smile Lines When you’re Sleeping!
Un-Wrinkle is like an over night facelift and over time shows dramatic results! Peter Thomas Roth has a whole Un-Wrinkle product line including and night cream, eye cream, serum, etc. This is the original and most beneficial of the bunch. I have many clients that use this product and love it! Clients say it shows great results and say it is great for in between botox treatments to “maintain” the complexion.

MAKEUP TRANSFER – A Scene from “The Crow”

Are there dark smudges on your pillows from your makeup? Ladies, you need to be removing your makeup every single night. Even if your too lazy to wash it off use makeup removing wipes. They are quick and easy. If you have a hard time getting you eye makeup off, use an oil based or cream eye makeup remover.

Brit recommends: Pond’s Cold Cream

LONGER LASHES – You’ve Been Falsely Accused

From wearing false lashes and multiple coats of mascara sometimes your lashes can take a beating! Especially during the summer season with all the water proof mascara drying out my lashes I tend to notice some thinning or loss of lashes. There are products that condition and nourish your lashes and can help them grow thicker and fuller. You can apply it to your lash line at night and over time you will notice a difference. I have tried many different ones that promise results, but few rarely do. Although, with Rapid Lash I did see noticeable result in thickness and length!

BAD BREATH – Did Your Cat Poop in There?!

Bad Breath is one of my biggest pet peeves. It beyond grosses me out! Even if you brush your teeth before you hit the hay, you are bound to wake up with morning breath. Ew! While there is no cure for that funky taste, there are methods to reduce the odor. Always brush first (for 2 minutes) and don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of you mouth. That’s where most of the smell comes from. You can always use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria as well. Next, be sure to floss, and last but not least rinse with mouthwash. This will loosen any last particles stuck between your teeth.

Brit recommends: Oral-B Electric Toothbrush, Colgate Wisp

***BONUS TIP: Sleep on a satin pillow case. Not only is it good for your skin, but it also minimizes friction (i.e. frizz) which is good if you live anywhere that has humidity! So, it is good for your hair, too. Bye bye bedhead!

Fit & Fab: 5 Ways to Find 15 Minutes For Fitness

I don’t know about you, but I barely have enough time in my day to breathe (or write these articles) let alone go to the gym that pay to have a membership to. So, some days I just need a few minutes to squeeze in my workout. These tips will hopefully help you get back on track for bikini season and get you your 15 minute workout you need to stay in shape!

1. Plan Your Day
Prioritize! We all have certain times of the day when we are most focused and productive. Schedule your biggest task for that time (for many people it’s in the morning). You’ll get it done more quickly and efficiently than if you wait to tackle it during a natural low point, like later in the day.

Laying out your exercise clothes, work clothes, etc. at night makes it far more likely that you will get up and get moving  to start your day. This will make it easier for a morning workout or packing your workout gear for later in the day instead of hitting snooze and skipping it all together.

2. Be Organized/Have A Routine
Amazing how you find time for everything on your calendar, right?! I put EVERYTHING in my calendar. If it’s not in there… chances are I will forget to do it. That’s because it’s there in black and white, simply organized, and demanding time. Block out your workouts as you would work appointments and you won’t miss them.

Having a place for everything! I used to waste time looking for my keys or glasses (I’m sure most of you have done this at some point or another). Finally, I made an antique wood coat rack and art project and painted it. I have it in the house now by the front door and it has a box that holds keys as well. Cute and fun. As for my glasses, I immediately place them in my purse if I’m out and on my night stand if I’m home. Having a routine helps! Try this trick with anything you lose regularly.

3. Limit Your Social Networking/Try Calling Instead
How much time do you spend social networking (not just from your computer, but your phone, too)? You don’t have to banish Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram from your life entirely, but limit it to a couple sessions a day. Then STICK TO IT!

Texting or emailing can be great time savers, but sometimes it takes 15 messages to accomplish what you could say in a 40 second phone call. As soon as it starts getting complicated, try and pick up the phone.

4. Record Your Shows/Utilize Commercials
A typical hour long TV show has 40 to 45 minutes of the actual “show” and the rest is commercials. If you watch 2 shows, that’s over 30 minutes you could have spent doing something else. It’s well worth investing in a digital TV recorder so you can watch just what you want and give you more time to for quick workouts.If you don’t want to invest in a DVR or TiVO, then you can utilize the commercials for 5 minute workouts which all add up.

5. Buy More Time
Pay for services that take too much time out of your day. Now, before you totally throw the idea out of hiring a laundry or cleaning service, think hard about this one. Have you been known to spend a $100 here or there on shoes, clothes or handbags that you don’t really need (but want) while you slave away all your spare time scrubbing the tub. By hiring a cleaning service to do the heavy-duty stuff twice a month and possibly looking into pre-made meal plans, you’ll buy yourself more than enough time to workout. It’s time to reconsider your expenditures.
